During our trip to visit the in-laws this past Christmas (geez, felt like it was yesterday) we crossed a major milestone with Jake. In fact, even though O is a full 16 months older than Jake he was the one to reach it first. What could that be?

Well, Jake got his very first haircut!! His hair wasn’t too bad and in fact wasn’t really all that long.

Excuse me while I go off on a brief tangent

When I was in my early 20’s experiencing all my hipppiness (long hair and all) I imagined having a baby boy and that he would have this long hair. Kind of like Tarzan’s son, you know? Where he doesn’t look quite like a girl and looks all free-spirited!

Yeah, well I think that’s changed a bit. Well a lot has changed actually. I for one, don’t have that long hair anymore although I may argue that there is still that hippy deep down inside of me. More importantly I just don’t have those same aspirations anymore for my little boy. Truth is (not saying this in all cases) that most little boys, especially Jake’s age, look like little girls with long hair. Not that I have anything against him being in touch with his feminine side but I guess I just got a tad more conservative.

Tangent over.

So, his hair wasn’t terribly long. It was more just out of wack. See, when little babies are born for some crazy reason their hair doesn’t come in at the same time nor at the same rate. So Jake wound up with hair really long hanging over his ears and then some long pieces in the back. It was the kind of hair that just made you want to sneek up on him and “snip snip”.

I think all parents are anxious about their child’s first haircut. Even though I was excited for his haircut I still was a bit sad. It was certainly a day he turned from infant, all natural, just as God made him, to little boy.

Jake sat on The Boss’ lap and sat thru a rather long haircut. We were just expecting a few pieces to be trimmed but he got the full treatment! They said he was the best “First Time Haircut Baby” they saw. We were so proud of him for doing such a great job! When he was done? Wow, what a difference! Looked like the sweetest little boy.

The ironic twist in the end? Well, we didn’t have Jake’s hair grown out to the point that his gender was questioned but apparently the Barber still couldn’t tell because his little certification he got? Yeah, it read “Our Little Girls First Haircut”.

Not everything works out perfect but somehow it does come together in the end. And the getting there part? Yeah, that’s the good part!
